Wärtsilä Secures Landmark 123 MW Power Plant Project in Texas Featuring the World’s Largest Wärtsilä 31SG Engine Installation

Wärtsilä wins major flexible power plant project in Texas

Technology group Wärtsilä has secured a significant power generation project in the United States with the development of a 123 MW gas-fired power plant in Odessa, Texas. The facility will supply electricity to the ERCOT (Electric Reliability Council of Texas) grid, one of the most dynamic and competitive power markets in North America.

The new installation will become the largest power plant in the world powered by Wärtsilä 31 series engines, reinforcing the company’s growing presence in flexible engine-based power generation solutions.

The project will be delivered together with a 10-year operation and maintenance (O&M) agreement, ensuring high availability and optimized performance of the plant throughout its lifecycle.

Powered by Wärtsilä 31SG gas engines

The facility will be equipped with 10 Wärtsilä 31SG engines, part of the renowned Wärtsilä 31 engine platform, which is widely recognized for its high efficiency, fast response capability, and operational flexibility.

The Wärtsilä 31SG (Spark Gas) engine is designed specifically for natural gas power generation, offering extremely efficient performance while maintaining low emissions and reliable operation in flexible grid environments.

One of the most remarkable characteristics of the Wärtsilä 31SG engine is its rapid start capability, allowing the plant to reach full power output in approximately 2.5 minutes. This capability is essential in modern power systems where electricity generation must quickly respond to fluctuations in renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

Wärtsilä 31 and Wärtsilä 31SG engine technology

The Wärtsilä 31 engine platform is one of the most advanced reciprocating engine technologies used in both power generation and marine propulsion.

Key characteristics of the Wärtsilä 31 and Wärtsilä 31SG engines include:

  • High electrical efficiency in gas-fired operation

  • Extremely fast start and ramp-up capability

  • Flexible load response suitable for renewable-heavy grids

  • Optimized fuel consumption

  • Low emissions operation

  • High reliability in continuous or cycling operation

The Wärtsilä 31 platform is available in multiple configurations including:

  • Wärtsilä 31SG – Spark ignited gas engine

  • Wärtsilä 31DF – Dual fuel engine

  • Wärtsilä 31 – Diesel engine variant

These engines are commonly used in:

  • Utility-scale power plants

  • Grid balancing facilities

  • Renewable energy support plants

  • Independent power producer (IPP) projects

  • Industrial power generation systems

Designed for modern energy systems

Power plants based on Wärtsilä 31SG engines are particularly suited for power systems with high levels of renewable energy integration.

Unlike traditional baseload plants, engine-based power plants can start quickly, ramp output rapidly, and operate efficiently across varying load conditions. This flexibility makes them ideal for balancing intermittent renewable energy sources and stabilizing electricity grids.

The Odessa project demonstrates how flexible engine power plants are becoming a key part of modern electricity infrastructure, particularly in markets like Texas where renewable energy penetration continues to grow.

Long-term operations and maintenance agreement

In addition to supplying the engines and power plant technology, Wärtsilä will provide a 10-year operations and maintenance agreement for the facility.

Such agreements ensure:

  • optimal engine performance

  • predictive maintenance

  • reduced downtime

  • long-term operational reliability

This service model allows plant owners to benefit from Wärtsilä’s global expertise in engine power plant operations and lifecycle support.

A milestone for the Wärtsilä 31 platform

The Odessa installation represents a major milestone for the Wärtsilä 31 engine series, which continues to expand its role in global energy infrastructure.

With increasing demand for fast, efficient and flexible power generation, the Wärtsilä 31 and Wärtsilä 31SG engines are becoming key technologies for utilities, developers, and energy investors looking to support the transition toward more resilient and renewable-compatible power systems.

The Texas project once again demonstrates the ability of engine-based power plants powered by Wärtsilä 31 technology to deliver reliable electricity while supporting the future of flexible energy generation.
