Details :

Do you want 7% better fuel consumption or up to 15% increased power from your genset?
Bowman Power has field-proven exhaust heat recovery systems for the Cummins KTA-50 and Scania D12 engines that will improve the BSFC by approximately 7%.

Do you have a fleet of these engines?
If so, contact us to reduce your fuel cost and your carbon footprint.

Do you use a different genset?
We have other solutions in development. Talk to us at Bowman Power Group.

So, who are Bowman Power?
We are a privately owned technology company with world-class expertise in three key areas:

  • Compact, reliable and efficient turbomachinery
  • High-speed, high-efficiency electrical machines
  • Software-controlled power management electronics

Bowman is an expert in the recovery of useful energy from waste heat in order to build more fuel-efficient power plants, which improves payback and reduces emissions.

Turbogenerators for reciprocating engines

Bowman's power generator core market is medium to heavy-duty turbocharged reciprocating (piston) engines in the 250kW to 1MW power range (typically 6l to 50l engine displacement). A turbogenerator used with such engines will produce an additional 10% to 20% more power and therefore have a power rating from 25kW to 100kW.

The turbocharger is driven by the waste energy in the engine exhaust but has been used principally to boost power rather than to maximise energy recovery and reduce fuel consumption. Typically 33% of the energy in the fuel exits in the exhaust of a turbocharged engine. A further stage of turbine expansion can therefore be used to recover even more energy and boost efficiency as well as power. This turbine can be used to mechanically drive the engine crankshaft (known as turbo-compounding) or to drive an electrical generator (known as a turbogenerator).

Turbogenerators for power plants

With power generation applications the power from the turbogenerator is channelled via the Bowman power electronics directly to the grid in parallel to the main alternator of the engine. Bowman provides power electronics with the system to provide grid quality 50Hz/60Hz power.

The benefits of exhaust energy recovery for the generator market are:

  • Increased engine power by up to 20% or reduced fuel consumption by up to 8%
  • Reduced emissions pro-rata to the fuel reduction

Whilst Bowman already has hardware for a number of engine sizes, each new engine and application will go through a thorough qualification and evaluation process by our highly specialised R&D team to determine if adjustments on design and optimisation are needed or if a bespoke design has to be implemented.

Power electronics for turbogenerators

In a typical Bowman turbo-compounding system the power electronics performs two important functions. Firstly, it takes the high-frequency, unregulated electrical power output from the turbogenerator alternator and processes it into a more useful form; i.e. a fixed DC output for vehicle applications or a three-phase grid connected, 50Hz, 400VAC output for stationary power applications.

The second important function of the power electronics is to control the running speed to maximise efficiency. It does this by varying the load on the turbogenerator; e.g. if more power is available in the engine exhaust and the turbogenerator begins to accelerate, then the power electronics will sense the change in speed and increase the load and hold the speed constant.

Power conditioners

Bowman power conditioners can be used in a number of applications, including fuel cells, wind turbines, turbo-compounding generators or high-speed generators.

Service support for turbogenerators and power electronics

Initial service and commissioning support is included when you purchase from Bowman. We run training sessions for your service teams so that, once up and running, they can deal with the day-to-day issues, safe in the knowledge that we are just a phone call away.

We can remotely monitor the performance of our systems and the local energy demands, allowing you to relax, safe in the knowledge that your machines will be running at optimum performance at all times.

Wherever you operate, Bowman will support you every step of the way. We continue to offer parts and service for previously supplied microturbines and power electronics.
