Engines and propulsion

The Motorship - essential engineroom equipment

Propulsion and machinery have formed the major emphasis in The Motorship for over 90 years – the original and best

The Motorship was established in 1920 to promote the idea of the then-novel large Diesel engine for ship propulsion. Now the concept of 'motor ships' is established, we still put the emphasis on the ship and its machinery. We were the first publication to concentrate on ship propulsion.

Today, this emphasis is as relevant as ever. The propulsion system is the heart of the ship, and, with the current drive to high efficiency and low emissions the challenge for designers, builders and operators has never been greater.

The Motorship brings you the latest news and developments; every issue contains at least one propulsion-related major feature: low-speed engines, the workhorses of the ocean-going cargo ship; medium speed engines, particularly at home in passenger ships and offshore vessels, especially where they are used to generate electricity for diesel-electric propulsion systems or on-board power supply; and high speed engines, long the preserve of smaller, specialised ships, but their high efficiency and very low emissions burning low-sulphur fuels mean that they can point the way for cleaner, more economical large engines.

And with emissions limitations encouraging the use of alternative fuels, different engine types and designs will be needed for the future. The Motorship will continue to keep its readers abreast of all these developments.
