In an attempt to counter huge power shortages in the country, the Iraqi government has announced the construction of a new $130m 500 megawatt power station in the south of the country.

The contract has been awarded to Baghdad Co for Gas Turbines Ltd, an Iraqi company, and a spokesman for the electricity ministry told Dow Jones Newswires: “The cabinet has decided to award a contract to Baghdad Co for Gas Turbines Ltd to build the gas-fired Al Haidariyah power station.”

The project will be on a turkney basis, and is planned to be completed within 18 months of work starting. Gas turbines from GE have already been purchased by the Iraqi government for the project, which will be in the Najaf governorate.
