After experiencing operational issues from unknown causes
with their Daihatsu 6DL-24 auxiliary engine over a long
period of time, the vessel owner requested that Goltens
move the entire engine to its workshop for a complete
calibration of the engine.
Goltens discussed the detailed inspection protocols with the
superintendent engineer and began the work. Laser checks
on the alignment of the camshaft bearing pockets revealed a
major misalignment that was causing the issues in the
engine. Goltens proposed to line bore the pockets and to
manufacture bearing bushes to restore the engine to
operation.
REPAIRS CONSISTED OF:
• Full calibration of engine
• Magnetic Particle Checks (MPI) for cracks and Laser
alignment check of camshaft bearing pockets
• Line Boring of the bearing pockets to enlarge the
diameter from 160.00mm to 170.00mm.
• Fabrication of new 5.00mm thickness bushes and cold
installation in the bearing pockets
• Polishing and calibration of bushes after cold installation
• MPI checks for cracks and Laser alignment check of
camshaft bearing channels after repair.
RESULTS:
Goltens technicians completed this machining job within 3
days to keep up with customer’s sailing schedule. As a result
of the excellent results and confidence in the results, Goltens
was awarded the complete overhaul of the diesel during the
upcoming dry-docking of the vessel.
