Schlüssel Reederei of Bremen (Germany) and Goltens Dubai
agreed in early 2011 to carry out replacement and
rebabbiting service program for all Sulzer 9RTA-84 main
engine crankpin bearings on three sister ships that regularly
call at the Jebel Ali Port.
The primary challenge was to complete crankpin bearing
reconditioning and replacement at every port call in UAE
without interrupting the vessel’s commercial commitments. A
plan was made to rebabbitt a spare bearing, install it at a port
call, remove the worn bearing and repeat the process at the
next port call. A much shorter lead-time compared to the
conventional OEM options.
Goltens deployed 1 foreman and 3 technicians to attend the
first vessel and completed the removal of the worn crankpin
bearing and installing the reconditioned spare. Goltens then
brought the worn bearing back to its workshop facility for
rebabbitting. A total of 27 bearings are scheduled to be
reconditioned and installed over a period of 20 months with
no interruption to vessel schedule.
In the first 12 months, 10 of the 27 bearings have been
removed and undergone the rebabbitting and replacement
process.
REPAIRS CONSISTED OF:
• Removal, refit, scraping and blue check of crankpin
bearings
• Rebabbitting of bearings with inside diameter of 870.00
mm (thickness of 4-5 mm).
• Ultrasonic Scan / Bonding test
• Class certification by Lloyds
• Installation of reconditioned bearings
RESULTS:
Goltens’ 60 plus years of experience in rebabbitting white
metal bearings & precision machining, combined with our
strength in 2-stroke diesel engine repairs, resulted in a fully
satisfied customer and vessels’ compliance with class survey
requirements.
